‘It’s Edinburgh’s own Asia Week’ as two Asian sales compete

Bonhams Edinburgh  Edinburgh Bonhams saleroom nicely dressed with rather a lot of huanghuali for Wednesday’s sale   Photo Paul Harris

There aren’t usually many Asian sales in Edinburgh. This week there are two – both on the same day. Ribbed about this, Bonhams’ Ian Glennie joked, ‘It’s Edinburgh’s own Asia week’. Of course, two swallows don’t make a summer and there isn’t much else Asian going on in Edinburgh this week . . .

Glennie avers, ‘We set the date for our spring Asian sale last October, then Lyon & Turnbull announce they are having an Asian sale the same day.’ It does seem that some sort of competitive accommodation has been reached between the two rooms: Bonhams sale is at 11 am and the Lyon & Turnbull event has been put back to 2 pm.

We viewed both sales on Sunday. The Bonhams sale is notweworthy for some rather fine pieces of furniture with rather a lot of huanghuali. The Lyon & Turnbull sale is a mixter maxter: you get the impression it is a ‘filler’ in between its more high profile Asian sales held at locations in London and St Neots. They haven’t printed a catalogue for the sale. That is a bit unusual. Even a roneoed list (you remember the roneo machine?) would have been useful, and very cheap. It is, of course, up online, as usual, but you will need to do your homework in advance and do the computer printouts if you are going to bid in person on site. In the event, we’ve left bids (in both sales) and will be off to London for the day . . .

Size doesn’t matter – at least at Bonhams Edinburgh

Bonhams Edinburgh room

Bonhams Edinburgh rooms before the sale

The old adage ‘size doesn’t matter’ was borne out at Bonhams Edinburgh November 18 Asian Art sale. Consistently high prices were achieved in a small section of the sale devoted to cinnabar lacquer snuff bottles. There were 11 lots comprising single bottles and one lot of six extensively repaired bottles.

The six bottles lot made £21,000 on the hammer (against an estimate of just £6-800) and two single bottle lots over £6,000 (estimates £5-600) with several lots of single bottles around £4,000 each. Two similar lots made just £300 each: what might be regarded, perhaps, as the normal sort of price.

So, what was going on, those in the room puzzled? Probably, the auctioneer also, although Ian Glennie perched on the podium appeared unfazed by the dramatic results achieved. All the bottles were interesting in that they were deeply carved, some with continuous wraparound scenes. All bore a satisfactory patina of age suggesting they could be early 19th century, if not older.

Gossip in the trade suggests that the small red bottles were recognised by several London dealers as coming from a little known collection which, in turn, had acquired them several decades ago from a well known collection. Clearly, Bonhams were unaware of this otherwise they might have been exposed for sale in London. As it was, telephone and internet bidding was fast and furious producing a very happy result for auctioneers and vendor.

The other star in the sale was Lot 354, a large enamelled Yixing teapot and cover circa 1820 and signed by Xiao Yuanhua. There were clearly some hopes for it as it was estimated at £5,000-8,000. In the event, it was knocked down at £38,000, plus 25% buyer’s commission.

Asian art auctions crowd the calendar in November

gavel 1 Auction fever in November

For the Asian art buyer next month promises to be a taxing, wallet emptying experience . . . It is the busiest month ever for Asian art auctions. Starting November 3 with London’s Chiswick Auctions, the next 28 days of the month of November will see no fewer  than 20 major auctions of Asian art.

The sales range in size from Sotheby’s November 11 sale of Classical Chinese Furniture from a European Private Collection with just 28 lots of fine-looking huanghuali furniture, to Woolley & Wallis’s usual two day extravaganza on November 17 and 18. They range in location from Bonhams Edinburgh rooms to Dukes in Dorchester and Peter Francis in Carmarthen.

The plethora of sales raises problems of logistics for the avid follower of Chinese auction offerings. Even if you only peruse catalogues on line, you have to set aside at least a couple of days. As for attending all the sales, that is a practical impossibility given the distances involved and the fact that many sales compete with each other on the same day!

Things calm down, thankfully, at the end of the month, although you may care to take in, if you have the energy and the bank balance left, the Lyon & Turnbull auction at Crosshall Manor, St Neots, Cambridgeshire. L&T are again abandoning their elegant Edinburgh saleroom for a small barn in order to be within relatively easy reach of the London market and Heathrow airport.

The auction mania is effectively driven by other surrounding events. The prestigious Olympia Winter Art & Antiques Fair has a strong Chinese and Asian showing this year and starts with its private view on November 2. Asian Art in London starts on November 5 and runs on until the 14th. Both events bring thousands of Asian buyers to London.

Listings for all the auctions can be found on our Auctions Nationwide page which is accessible from the slider bar on the Home Page of chineseart.co.uk

New Asian auction venue announced by L&T for next sale

The Edinburgh-based auctioneer Lyon & Turnbull has announced that its end of year Asian Works of Art sale will not be held in its elegant Edinburgh auction room. Instead, the sale, which is usually bi-annual in June and December, will be held at Crosshall Manor, St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, a relatively short distance from London. It will take place on Tuesday, December 2.

The head of the Asian department, Lee Young, formally advised the move in public last Sunday at the L&T China day in Edinburgh (see our report). Surprisingly frankly, he observed, ‘Most of the market tends to be in London . . . (on a recent trip) I was told in Hong Kong that Scotland tends to be just a little too far away (for foreign buyers.’

Lyon & Turnbull’s Lee Young announces a ‘near London’ venue for Asian Art sale

We understand that no final decision has been made on moving Asian sales away from Edinburgh in the future. The only other auctioneer offering high quality specialist Asian sales in Edinburgh is Bonhams who, again, hold biannual catalogued sales. Doubtless, L & T will be weighing up the impact on sourcing goods in Scotland (where a large amount of Chinese material remains in private collections) if they were to abandon Asian sales in the Scottish capital in favour of a location in the south of England.

Fiorentini Collection porcelain gallops home at Bonhams Edinburgh

Twenty-nine lots of porcelain from the Fiorentini Collection were sold July 2 by Bonhams Edinburgh for a well above estimate £105,000, inclusive of 25% premium. They were offered for sale by the executors of the estate of Ruth Fiorentini. She, and her late husband, ran an advertising agency in the West End of London with Cartier among their A List clients.

They spent much of their spare time attending auctions from the post-war period through to the 1980s. Chinese porcelain gradually became their main interest. Their interest led to a close friendship with the well known collector E G Kostalany and they purchased a number of pieces from him. One of the attractive purchases from him, in March 1981, was a fine famille verte brushpot (bitong) which bears labels from previous owners, including the City of Manchester Art Gallery (illustrated below). It went for a very respectable hammer price of £5,500 (estimate £3-5,000)..

fio brush pot fio brushpot labels various labels to base £5,500 hammer

There were also a number of good blanc-de-chine pieces, most also from Kostolany,  including a tripod incense burner similar to one in the Percival David foundation of Chinese Art (no. 424). It achieved  on the hammer £4,800 (estimate £1,200-500).

fio blancdechine incense burner

However, the highest price in the sale was achieved by a very pretty, unassuming,  finely potted, lobed small saucer dish which bore a Yongzheng mark to the base and featured a shaped lotus flower to the interior. Against an estimate of £600-800, it made a premium inclusive £13,750.

123 sold £13750

The second highest price of £11,250 went to a sang-de-boeuf bowl estimated at £2,000-3,000. It opened on a commission bid at £5,000.

fio sangdeboeuf bowl

Lot 129 A sang-de-boeuf glazed bowl with Quianlong seal mark. Diameter 15cm.

The prices set the dealers in the room tut-tutting. One prominent London dealer had great difficulty getting in amongst the competition from telephone and internet. An Edinburgh Asian dealer observed, “Most of these pieces, if they hadn’t had the cachet of the Fiorentini Collection, would probably have sold here for half the price.”

The thirtieth lot, a rather modest collection of a couple of dozen of Ruth Fiorentini’s reference books, with some wooden stands thrown in, got a surprising £1,375, inclusive of premium.

Prices remain firm at Bonhams Edinburgh

Although there no sensationally high prices at Bonhams Edinburgh on March 26, many interesting lots achieved results way in excess of expectations. Lot 268, a large famille rose punch bowl, estimated pre-sale at £500-700, achieved £3,800 hammer despite two pronounced cracks. It was, indeed, very pretty and was almost certainly 18th century.  One of our favourites (Lot 142) was a banded agate bowl, thinly carved and containing natural whorls. There was no other information on it, estimated at £100-200, but it leapt away, on account of its prettiness, to £1,000.

A jade-mounted hand mirror catalogued as ’19th century but using earlier jade’ was also remarkably attractive and it easily made £4,000 as against its £500-800 estimate.

Another, this time early 19th century, punchbowl, slightly unusual in having been produced for the Near Eastern market as opposed to the Western one, took £4,000. At 39.5cm. diameter it was quite large and in very good condition.

lot 274 punch bowl

One of the highest prices in the sale was for a majestic pair of Cantonese export floor vases, ca. 1850, which were, indeed, impressive, each standing to 104cm. including wooden stand. A hammer price of £8,200 for the pair seemed quite modest.

lot 297 pair vases

One lot illustrated just how prices can vary dramatically from sale to sale. A very pretty huanghuali table top display stand (most probably 20th century) which very recently ground to a halt at just under £2,000 at another auction house, achieved a very respectable £4,200. The vendor must have been rather pleased . . . we were, also, as we chose it as our Object of Desire, the first time it was exposed.

Chinese embroidery embellishes Edinburgh Asian sale

Bonham’s Edinburgh Asian sale (November 13) was marked by some good prices for items of Chinese embroidery and clothing which far exceeded estimates. Lot 139, a large embroidered panel catalogued as South East Asian 19th century fetched £3,500 on the hammer against an estimate of £5-700. Some in the room opined that it was, in fact, Chinese.

Three pairs of mandarin squares together with two single examples were estimated at £3-400 and achieved £2,500, whilst two embroidered silk robes were knocked down at £2,600 (estimate £5-700). A sundry lot of textiles, including an embroidered robe collar, estimated at £2-300, made £1,900.

Prices in other areas were much as expected towards the high end of estimates and, only occasionally exceeding them dramatically.

lot 139 Lot 139 Embroidered panel   £3,500

Meantime, as this sale was going on, Bonhams in Harrogate sold a 1967 Aston Martin for £131,240. It went to a buyer in China, demonstrating just how demand in so many different areas is now being driven, literally and metaphorically by the Chinese market.
